It all depends on what you want your laptop to do for you. If it is going to be your primarily used for "normal everyday things" like e-mailing and surfing the internet then a more simple laptop with a 60 gig HDD and around 512mb of ram and integrated sound and video would be fine. If you want to do heavy gaming or video editing or anything a bit more "demanding" then you would want to double all those numbers and get a video card for it. Check out http://www.pcworld.com/ic/laptops/ for reviews. I hope this is helpful and makes sense.

The ultimate answer for this would be integrated video! If you do not get a laptop with a discrete video card you will kick yourself in the butt. Guaranteed. Many people who purchase new ones(without discrete video) always have trouble down the line with their 1500 dollar purchase being outdated in under a year. Why? Shared video greatly reduces performance. Also try to stay way from the Pentium M and "laptop" processors. If you are not concerned about battery life and saving power you will be very happy with a full-fledged core2.

Well, since mine is 6 yrs old, first check the flimsiness (correct word?) of the mouse buttons. I've replaced mine twice. How are the cooling fans inside? How much HD space? Does it have capability of running new games, such as top available video card?
Good luck. I'm still saving for my replacement laptop (woe is me).

Watch out for low hard drive capacity.
WATCH OUT CAREFULLY FOR ITS COOLING TENDENCIES!!! All laptops by nature, because they're flat-ish and because the fan's on the bottom and not much elevated and not much room to suck fresh air, are prone to overheat. Make sure your chosen laptop cools itself well!!! (I can say this with fear, as mine overheated twice this year and I had to rebuild the OS and reinstall the software from scratch...grrr...)
If you're into syncing with a handheld, watch for an I/R port.
If it doesn't have enough USB holes (and mebbe USB2) you may find yerself moaning!
Type a REALLY LONG paragraph with the keyboard, REALLY FAST! Can you live with it?
