I personally feel that because there is such a fine line between those to emotions, sometimes there is no difference. This is because hate and love are the strongest emotions that anyone can ever feel.
Drawing from the saying that enemies make the best lovers, I've thought of people I know that have hated someone with evey fiber of their being and then one day tell me that guess what? They have feelings for the person that they have hated for a very long time.
So, even though a lot of people think that there is a huge difference, very often that fine line is crossed and there isn't.

Love is self-giving. "The success of love is in the loving ... it is not in the result of loving. Of course it is natural in love to want the best for the other person, but whether it turns out that way or not does not determine the value of what we have done"*
------- ------- -------
Hate is self-taking. When the hater doesn't get their self needs taken care of this transforms to hate to control the person/ thing/ object that can give them what they want (like stealing, through force, manipulation, etc-etc-etc) .
A sad example of hate is murder. When a murder occurs, often the surviovors will want to TAKE from the murderer what was taken from them. This need for "TAKING" justice can (for some) be all consuming and the focus goes off of loving the person who was murdered to "Taking" revenge for selfish reasons on the person who murdered their beloved. This is why courts are needed to impose "Justice" vs the survivors imposing the justice.

The feelings. the feeling of love is way different from hate.
Love makes my heart smile with care. Hate makes my heart not to care. The differences is the feelings you get from them.

No details necessary, it's all about individual perception. Anything can be transformed from a negative to a positive. Anything.
You get a star for an awesome question! :)

there is a very fine line
everyone thinks they are excat opposites... when in reality the opposite of love is indifference. of hate it would be peace.
both love and hate are very passionate (and completly overused phrases) feelings, people mix them up because they have opposite effects.
really (and chemically speaking) love and hate have essentially the same make up... only a few chemicals different.
its really interesting, if you want to hurt someone really bad, just don't care if they get hurt. hmmm.

Love is an intense feeling of positve form, hate is an intense feeling of negative form. Love gives positive reactions to ones health, hate does not. Both lie at greatly opposite extremes.

Love is the most powerful of all thought creativity...Hate, is a sub-emotion of Fear. Love is very light, pure energy, fear/hate is a very dense energy...Love is freeing, fear/hate is confining...Socially, they are the two ends of the spectrum of acceptable emotions...Both are highly productive creative sources.

Hmm... in my opinion, the difference is a slight alteration of the chemicals in the brain and the firing of this synapse instead of that one.
Human emotions are weird things...
