It seems we are about the only nation left to keep using an antiquated system of measurements like gallons, feet, and pounds. This causes numerous problems like losing probes on Mars and making it harder to trade with other nations. Is this simply a problem of not having gutsy leadership, laziness, short-sighted thinking, a conspiracy, or something else?

The main reason is that much of the manufacturing of small parts and subunits is done by small machine shops. The expense of re-tooling these facilities is not something that those manufacturers are willing to afford. Essentially, the small manufacturers refused to retool!

Excellent question.

I remember learning the metric system in school and there was this big push to change over in the US. Everything you bought had both units on it (and they still do). And then it just stopped.

I really don't understand it. Metric is so much easier to deal with, and it based on real earth physical properties, not the size of some kings foot or whatever.

I use metric as scientist all the time. Why we don't use it every day life, I don't understand.

I almost have to go with the laziness factor. Or maybe it just the fear of change.

I think its a matter of everything would need to be changed. Everything that everyone owns would need to be repurchased. All our text books would need to be reprinted. Everything would need to be relearned by 300 million people. You will never get everyone to change. An why would you call something that is newer than the metric system antiquated? Why is being different wrong?

It is harder to change than to learn it the first time . It will take several generations before we get our teachers changed.

It costs way too much money to switch measuring systems.
