Our 11 year old daughter started complaining of a uncomfortable burning itch. I gave her an anti-itch cream by monistat that our pharmist recommended. It seems to have worked, but this got me thinking. Should it reoccur I'd like to have her checked out. I'm not sure if our peditrician is where to take her or if maybe I should take her for her first trip to see a ob/gyn. She's at such a in-between age that I'm not certain which would be a better choice.

I had the same sort of problem with a 10 year old daughter who was giving off foul vaginal discharge. Turned out to be an infection.

What you should do is first take her to her pediatrician and talk to him/her. If they can help you, the problem is solved right there, no extra hassle. If not, they will refer you to a gynocologist for her. This is a good way to do it, because then they will refer you to a good doctor instead of you randomly pulling out a name from your insurance plan book. This was what I did with my daughter. Its not too early to see a gyno for her anyway, I've seen 8 year olds in there.

She may be uncomfortable having someone look up her vagina at this age, so try to get her to a female gynocologist. She'll feel more comfortable there than with a male. I hope that this helped and good luck!

I'm glad the Monistat worked, but she should be seen by a doctor. You're right, she's at that in-between age where she doesn't need to go to a "baby doctor" but may not belong at the gynecologist. Do you have a family practitioner? Otherwise, try calling your pediatrician to see if s/he treats these infections.

As a mom, I would not take my daughter to an ob/gyn until she was older, unless absolutely necessary. I think she would be freaked out.

BTW, yeast infections are not STDs. As a baby your daughter probably got thrush, which is caused by the same organism. Even diaper rashes are sometimes caused by it.

Itching doesn't necessarily mean yeast. If you use antibacterial soap it can disturb the vaginal bacteria and cause itching also. The OBGYN can test to see if it is yeast or not w/out doing a pap so it doesn't have to be so scary. It is common for 11 year olds to be seen this early now a days. Some 11 year olds are having sex at this age now. She could be starting to explore herself also.

Some pediatricians will be able to do an examination on her. Check with her doctor to see if that is something that they are willing to look at. If not, she is not too young to see a gyno. Talk to your daughter about how she might have gotten a yeast infection (is she sexually active?) Some people just produce too much bacterial and yeast so eating yogurt can help.

Her pediatrician would be the best place to start. Make sure its yeast and not an Ecoli infection from wiping the wrong way, that can lead to bladder infections also. Many young girls are not taught to wipe from front to back. That way the Ecoli that is present on our rectum does not enter on our vagina. They will only look externally and take a swab of the outside layers of the vaginal skin. Make sure she is seen by a female doctor or nurse practioner to make her more comfortable.

Take her to her pediatrician. Any gp or pediatrician can help with this. In fact, they do help with this, on a daily basis. For most things for which we need to see a doctor, a gp can manage quite nicely, and will refer you appropriately when s/he can't.

Frankly, you should have taken her the first time that she complained about this, as it's not necessarily a yeast infection. But you can't undo what's already been done.

I've seen girls as young as 9 in the office. See if her pediatrician will call her in a prescription for diflucan. Have her eat yogurt (if she likes it) or you can get her pills called AZO which has the lactobacillus in it to counteract the yeast. Monistat is a good start and some of my patients have even said that balmex or desitin helps with the pain and itching.

I would go ahead with the ob/gyn. Make sure you pick a female-at 11 no girl wants a man looking at her cooch.

After all who do you go to for a problem down there your regular dr. or your gyn?

Take her to her pediatrician to find out exactly what her problem is. It may be a yeast infection or a urinary infection. If the pediatrician wants to refer to to a gynocologist, there's certainly no reason not to. On the other hand, she may refer her to a urologist.
