Wow...the best running back based on pure athletic ability was probably Gale Sayers. If it hadn't have been for injuries he'd probably have the records still to this day.
Based on stats...gotta go with Barry Sanders or Jim Brown. Both supurb in their own right.
Now are we only talking the best pro running back because if we look at the best college running back of all time...that would be Herschel Walker or Bo Jackson.
There are so many arguements out there but bottom line the best running back of all time (based on pure ability) would have to be Gale Sayers. If you ever get a chance to see some of his tape...wow. All I can say is wow.

To be honest with you I never watched Jim Brown, Walter Peyton, or any of those other RB's from that era as I was born in 1981. So due to that I'll have to say Emmitt Smith for all the records that he holds or Barry Sanders because he played with no help at all really in Detroit.
The best RB in the making now? I have to say LaDainian Tomlinson. That man reminds me of a mixture of Emmitt and Barry. He'll hold some if not all of Emmitt's records by the time he retires.

Two words "Jim" "Brown". He was Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders and Franco Harris all in one running back. He been to 9 straight Pro Bowls and been a league MVP a couple of times...unfortunately he retired around 29.

In terms of a pure all around back that was capable of doing everything...thats tough to gauge.
Speed, durability, elusiveness, agility, breaking tackles, catching the ball out of the backfield, carrying a team...its a tough answer...
But I gotta take Sayers out of the equation, his career was hall of fame, but hella short, and as such lacked durability. Jim Brown wasnt asked to catch quite as much, and that takes him out the equation. Barry Sanders, much as i LOVED him as a player didnt carry his team much, a bunch of 15 hundred yard seasons and no to many playoff games, let alone playoff wins.
So far im left with emmit smith and walter payton.
Emmit has 3 rings, and granted his team carried him to those wins, without him the my Giants might still be beating the crap out the booys, and you know what game im talking about...friggin one shoulder.
