I'm happy, so far, with covad (DSL). They're widely available (so far as I know, they own the lines the phone companies use?). Their installation is smooth as silk. Their online chat reps are willing and able to give all sorts of help *before* you order (I got as much as 8 hours of yak before I chose them...). They're notably less expensive. No software is needed, just a connection (i.e., you don't have to run "MSN Premium" or "AOL" or any of those other system-diggers-in...).

Earthlink is also widespread, I had them for dialup once in the past. Requires system software. Hard to uninstall if you ever change your mind, and a bit pricey. Earthlink also owns PeoplePC (you've heard the ads, "a better way to internet"). Less expensive. Requires heavy use of insistent software. No mobile-device abilities.

Consumer Reports has always liked Juno.

That depends on what is available in your area and how much you are willing to pay for it. personally, I would forget about dial up [and satellite]. DSL, Cable or Fiber Optic would be better choices with DSL being the cheaper of the 3.

Whoever is your phone company can be your internet provider. I am with my phone company and I have a wireless broadband connection.
