I'm 34 and want to be sterilised, I'm married without children and we've been together for ten years. I haven't spoken to any doctors yet but I'm wondering what the process is and do you have to convince doctors that is what you really want. I've been wanting to do this for years but thought doctors would send me away to think about it some more, we are both 100% sure this is what we want. How long would it be from first talking to a doctor and then having the procedure

You need to be over 30 and completely sure you want it done ....so it sounds like you ll have no problems at all ask your GP for some information to take away and then when you have looked at and read it all ask your GP for a referral. It could take up to 12 months on the HHS but privately around 8/12 weeks.Good luck hope your happy with the results !!!

Depending on where you live, there may be an age restriction or if younger than that age have a certain number of children before you can have that procedure done. Usually, I think that age is around 25.
Thanks to improved technology, the procedure can be done quickly and with little recovery time. Though there is a shorter recovery time for a guy to have a vastectomy, less pain involved, and easier to reverse if necessary. Ask around. I'd be willing to bet you could have the procedure done, but I'm not sure about what the wait time is for something like that.

I was sterilised at 31, I was on my own with 2 children, two years later I met a wonderful man, and now wish I hadnt been, But in the end its your wish, just ask your doctor and then you will see the specialist, for me it was 4 months between requesting and getting the op. It also depends on your health serice provider and the waiting lists at your local hospital.

I think your first port of call should be your GP. Who would possibly then refer you to a Gynacologist who would then discuss your options. It might be easier for your husband to have a vasectomy, as female sterilisation can cause problems with periods and cycles etc. I know you can be referred privately to a Urologist for this procedure for a relatively inexpensive amount. It is easier I believe for a man to be sterilised than a woman, quicker recovery, less intrusive and less painful for you!

I'm 26 years old and was going to have it done. but my husband went and had a vasectomy because recovery time for a woman is like 6 weeks and for a man its only like 3 days. my husband had it done on a Friday and was back to work on Monday with a few limitations on lifting i think it was nothing over 10 lbs. but if you decide u want to do it instead of your husband doctors should do it because of your age, they would probably set the surgery a couple weeks off to allow you and your husband time to think about it and make its really what u wanna do

It is probably going to depend on the doctor. You should speak to your doctor about this and see what they say. I have heard serval different women wanting this have had doctors say they will not do it. I don't know of any men who have wanted it done and been told by the doctor no. Plus it is much easier on a man to have this done, than a woman.

Good Luck!

It's your body, your choice. You are at the stage that if you were to reproduce, you have a higher chance of the baby having a syndrome. They will just have you watch an educational video and then schedule the proceedure. It is really simple these days, they will go in through your belly button! Good luck!

It' ALWAYS elective. There's almost never a health reason to get it done. You could hvae gotten it done at 18 if you wanted to. Just see a urologist (if a man) and they can do it in the office these days.

If you're talking tubal ligation, that's also something that can be done electively. Just see your gyn about it and schedule the surgery.

If you're talking about getting your tubes tied, I had mine done at 23. The Dr said I was too young, but I talked him into it. I had 2 kids already, and it was the best decision. You're certainly old enough to make your own decisions.

As soon as you tell the Doctor that you want it and that you already made that decision.
