Owls kill there prey, however they are more than happy to take food that requires no effort like carrion.

It is extremely rare to find a predator that will not scavenge because it is just easier than hunting.

I'm pretty sure that owls catch all of thier food live. Vultures and Crows are usually the type of bird that are scavengers. Owls only come out at night, so they can hunt for thier food. I always see the Vultures and Crows out during the day eating a dead animal on the side of the road, but owls kill all of thier food.
