Perhaps you just worded this funny, but you seem to be assuming that somehow the negative talk about the Wings somehow means that there are less people who like them. That is far from the truth. It is the popularity and perennial success of the team that CAUSES the jealousy against them. If you don't believe me, ask fans of the New York Yankees in baseball. There are more Yankee fans than any other team, and yet there are also more people that despise them than any other team. The fact is that the better your favorite team is or the better your favorite player is, the most flack they are going to take. The reason is right there in your question: jealousy. So long as the Wings continue to be good, salary cap or no salary cap, and so long as so many people continue to LIKE the Wings (I see more "Go Wings" on here than any other team, and not just since the playoffs), this will continue to happen. When everyone stops talking about your team, then you have something to worry about.

Success breeds contempt. Fans of other teams are sick of seeing Detroit beat their teams consistently. If I were a fan of a team other than Detroit, I would be sick of seeing them win all the time too. They look at Detroit before the salary cap, with an owner, Mike Ilitch, who was willing to spend as much money as it took to assemble winning teams, and were jealous that their team's owner wasn't willing to do the same. They figured, once the salary cap came into effect, the Wings would be finished...and now are mad because it hasn't happened.
The Red Wings adapted, and remained successful, while another team that spent to win, the Colorado Avalanche, has tanked. People get mad that Detroit has been so good for so long, they feel its time to give some other teams a chance. If I were 30 years older, I would probably feel towards the Montreal Canadiens what a lot of people feel about the Red Wings today...You get tired of seeing the same team be that good for so long (unless you are a fan of that team, of course).
What it is is jealousy. They are jealous that Scotty Bowman turned the team into a perennial winner, and that they have maintained that success after he retired. They are jealous that Ken Holland has proven to be the single best team GM in all of sports. They are jealous that Detroit has the audacity to call itself Hockeytown, and then actually live up to the name! How dare they! They are jealous that being a Red Wing means you have a chance to win the Stanley Cup EVERY year. They are jealous that they have players who want to spend their entire careers there, and GOOD players, not just roleplayers.

You have to remember they've been competitive for a long time, they made the playoffs 16 years straight, won 3 cups and always put a good product on the ice. I think the reason there is some much hate or dislike is because the Red Wings have been kicking the tails of their teams. The red Wings are much like the NY Yankees of baseball...people hate them and are jealous because they typically were better than them :)

Anytime you have a major powerhouse like the Red Wings you are going to have haters. (Look at the Yankees) Regardless of the situation, Detroit always manages to put a quality product out on the ice, and that bothers some people. It's easy to hate the very best team, because they are constantly under the microscope. Don't sweat it. Just take it as a compliment everytime someone bashes the WINGS. Because they are really saying "you have the best team, and I don't".

I think most of the others have said all that can be on this subject, but I wanted to add my 2cents in.
I am not jealous of the Wings, I have a very healthy respect for them as a team, statement of fact... they are a very good team/tough to play against. However, being a fan of the Hurricanes, the team that they beat for the Cup, I have a healthy dislike for them as well.
Fans of other teams are going to dislike any other team that beats them, thats the nature of the game. I don't think a heated rivalry or dislike automatically = jealousy.

It's simple, there the favorite or at least they used to be. They had 2 cups in the late 90's and a good team capable of winning more. People like to see there team in the finals and if they don't make it they root for the underdog. Detroit is not the underdog. How boring would sports be if everyone expected to win does. The top seed from each conference in the finals every year. Boring. It's enjoyable to root against Detroit because they're expected to contend every year and I always root for the underdog.

I think they didnt sell out the playoff tickets because of the Pistons also being in the playoff's as they were last year. When you have two teams in the same area but different sports you have a toss up of who you are going to go watch. Personally I would go to see the Wings anyday but remember people are different.

I'm not jealous, but, before the Pronger hit, I didn't want them to win the series. It just gets a little boring when there's a dyansty. Remember the Stars, Avs, Wings, and Devils dynasties where they would make it deep in the playoffs or to the finals every year? That's just boring...the NHL needs a variety.

Another reason may be all the 14 year old girls who get on here and ask questions like "Don't you think the Red Wings are the best EVER?" or "Pavel is a hottie and the Wings are going to win the Cup. Right?"
It's f'n embarrassing. Look down 2 posts.

Jealous? No. I guess the problem I would have would be with some of the fans, such as the ones who try to get my son to cheer for their team or walk in acting like they own our house. Easy enough problem to solve. Switch seats with the poor kid and scream all night long, keeping it completely clean, of course. Since the seats next to ours were not sold because of a minor obstruction, eventually they leave.
I have nothing against the team but I personally root against them so that their fans have nothing to cheer for.
