Why do a lot of people say that Pronger is just a big goon and a horrible player who only knows how to throw his weight around, but now that he's suspended for a game, some of those same people are saying that the Ducks don't have a chance without him?

Just doesn't make sense...

It doesn't look like my question is being completely understood....

I am asking why people are contradicting themselves and making both statements, not why the statements are being made in the first place.

cuz unfortunately, all teams have fans who are ignorant or who have poor logic skills. but they also have some great fans too.

the red wings is one of those teams. you must've heard from those fans in the first category.

can't have it both ways, can you? good point

i'm a wings fan. i try to stay in the 2nd category.

add - that's why i said that "you can't have it both ways". you make a good point. if wings fans (or anyone else) say that Pronger is only good for hits, then it doesn't make sense to say, "now that Pronger is gone, it'll be easier to win". that doesn't make sense based on their own logic. because using their logic, Anaheim would still have a bunch of good players left ... since Pronger is supposedly good for only hits.

did you read what i wrote originally? (please do not answer)

(i'm not making judgements about Pronger or what he did/didn't do. i'm talking about the flawed reasoning of some wings fans.)

Good point. It doesn't matter how good a player is or how talented, if he commits an act that injures someone, he is going to take some flack for it. The truth is that Pronger is a very talented player, and obviously one of the best defensemen in the league. He is not up for the Norris trophy (despite missing a significant amount of games this season) for nothing! That said, he has a tendency to let his emotions get the best of him, and it has hurt his team in this case. It has happened before with him, which is likely why he was suspended. Considering how valuable he is to the team, it does diminish their chances. BUT... you and I both know that there is no guarantee. In the NHL, anything can happen. The Wings are doing alright, and they are missing two of their top four defensemen. If the Ducks use Pronger's absence as motivation, play their best game, and get the good bounces, they can still win. There is no guarantee that the Wings will bring their best to the rink either. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either blinded by team loyalty, or hasn't been watching hockey for very many years.

Note of interest: I am a Red Wings fan. Go Wings!

A single player doesn't make any team... they are a piece of the puzzle, some are bigger than others however. Pronger is an amazing all round defenseman. The ducks have alot of talent, they still have a very good chance to win tonight.

Are those chances lessened by Pronger's absense? Sure, but by how much is impossible to tell, even after the game.

I don't think people are contradicting themselves, they are just not making themselves clear on what they mean.

Most people are saying Pronger is a goon and known only for his hits and now that he is gone it will be easier to win because you don't have to worry about him hurting someone, trying to run a player down.

So the players don't have to worry about him, they can play hockey because they don't have to worry about watching their backs because he is not in the game.

I think he is a goon and loves to throw his size around but he is also a very good defenceman.

The Ducks will miss him.

Remember how they fell in the standings during the regular season when he was out with his broken foot?

Go Wings!!!!

To tell you the truth the only difference between Prongers hit and Alfreddsons hit is Tallinder didnt bleed and the refs actually saw Prongers hit. He got a 5 min game misconduct penalty I think that should have been enough.

I personally don't like Pronger, but that would change if he played for my team. He may be a little dirty sometimes, but I respect his game b/c he is a hell of a player.

A goon is someone like Andrew Peters or Brian McGratton who has really no skill but to swing his fist.
