An ecotone is a transition area between two different ecosystems. In the ecotone there are species from both ecosystems existing together. If a species loses its food source or other necessity in the ecosystem, there may be a substitute food or resource in the ecotone. Then the species can repopulate the ecosystem from the survivors in the ecotone.
