Well, it would take quite a while to go through ALL the species! Like anything, the supply and demand determine the "value" of the species. Those that are more rare species, or unusual coloration, those harder to keep or spawn, those that are wild-caught will have a higher price tag. The age of a fish will also figure into the cost (young specimens may not show full color potential, have cost the breeder less in time and care, so these will be less than a mature specimen).

The most costly of the cichlids would be the flowerhorn, which is a hybrid. Among those that are not hybrids, the discus. Here the color variety has an influence on the final price, so you can't say all members of the species are equally valuable.

For the least expensive, I'd have to go with convict cichlids. They're like guppies when it comes to spawning, and it seems everybody's got them and spawns them (they're very easy) so you can hardly give them away if you've got a batch of fry.

If you want to look at some real-time prices, check the cichlid pages in aquabid (http://www.aquabid.com/ ). Here you can see what values breeders and buyers actually place on their fish.

I agree that Discus would certainly be the most expensive followed closely by Altum angels, At least in my area. From there is would drop fairly quickly and next would probably be some of the more rare africans and some of the hard to breed dwarf south americans.

No doubt the cheapest ( at least where I live) would have to go to convicts. Shops here often have tanks of young one's for 25 cents each or 5 for a $1.

I do not know about the least expensive ones, but the most expensive of the Cichlid breed is surely the Discus fish.

A proven and medium age mating pair of Blue Discus (S. aequifaciata haraldi) that originate in the upper Amazon region in Brazil, can cost an average of 2000 US$. These are considered one of the most beautiful and hardiest of the discus too.

Though not a cichlid, Synodontis Granulosis cost retail $600+ if you can find them.
