A great book for a beginner is: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beginning-CSS-Web-Development-Professional/dp/1590596897/ref=pd_bowtega_2/202-6827380-3771017?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179439792&sr=1-2

To help learn avoiding tables, see "HTML Utopia: Designing Without Tables Using CSS" by Dan Shafer.
Two good books for web design in general are:
Web Design in a Nutshell, by Jennifer Niederst (OReilly)
and (if you're into just, theory and attitude) Designing Web Usability, by Jakob Nielsen
