You can't copyright a brand name, which is what a band name is. You can register it as a trademark. However, it must actually be in use (or in use within 6 months). You can't simply reserve names because you like them. Also, you need to do a search to see if anyone else has registered it or something close to it already. Go to uspto.gov for info on registering trademarks.

copyright applies to a written or printed work. You OWN the copyright the instant you create the work. However, you must REGISTER the copyright with the Library Of Congress in order to enforce it and get damages.
you can TRADEMARK the name of a band, within specific classes (i.e., sound recordings, T-shirts, posters, etc.). By placing TM next to the name, you acquire a limited trademark. By registering the trademark - in appropriate classes - with the US Patent And Trademark Office, you acquire greater rights.
For example, Prince (the guy in purple) has the trademark for sound recordings, but Prince (the company) has the trademark for tennis rqackets.

You can't copyright names. What you want is a trademark. The cost will be at least $350 just to get the ball rolling, and could easily be over $1000 total.

There are several ways to copyright something and it depends on the manner in which you copyright it.

Go to the Library of Congress website. They give you all the details. I think it's about $45 to have something copywrited.
