My company is called The HUNK of JUNK w/ the tag line "We'll Haul Away Just About Anything!" Problem is 1-800-Got-JUNK? is all over the place here. What should I do to start pulling in jobs? I had signs made that say (888)-HUNK-OF-JUNK We Haul Away Anything! But I need to start working now! Should I cold call people? I am in Philadelphia and I am debating calling campus's to help do their clean outs. Please advise. Thanks.

Advertising works wonders.
No-one will use you if they don't know you exist.
newspapers, internet...get a free website and get it on the search engines. Put posters up anywhere you are allowed to.

You could try advertising with a mailer such as Val-Pac in my area, I'm not sure if it's a nationwide name but the idea is. You could contact the company and find out how much it costs for placement in the mailer and the distribution of the mailer. Then you would create a coupon to go in the packet and see the results. You would be working at a discounted rate because of the coupon but it beats not working at all and also if you are the real deal people will refer you and return to you. Another possibility is to speak to landlords and property owners. Many people are removed from thier homes.

1-800-GOT-JUNK started much the same way you are starting. Some healthy competition will probably be good for them! Advertising always helps. Cold calling can be difficult, but is a good way to get new clients and to let people know your service is out there. If there's a trade show or job fair in your area, try to get a booth there and make sure to have business cards handy at all times to hand out for networking purposes!

I would try contacting apartment buildings and passing out your business card telling them you will haul stuff away after eviction of anything they need. Also contact local businesses, and handout business cards to them offering to haul away and junk they may have laying around. Just be careful of the hazardous materials they have regulations about that, and how it can be hauled. I hope this helps.
