In case of emergencies. I believe that cell phones should be allowed in schools, however they need to be properly and effectively managed and enforced to not use for social purposes or during class time.

I believe they should be allowed in schools, even Middle schools. If my daughter's school were ever threatened by natural disaster, fire, or heaven forbid an attacker, I want to know she would be able to contact me. Also, sometimes ball practice runs late, or is over early, or a ride doesn't show up on time. In today's world, cell phones are a security issue, not just a convienence.
However, I believe their should be restrictions on when students may use them. I understand cheating a serious problem and that cell phones can fuel that issue further. Our school will take up cell phones being used during school hours for any reason other than an emergency. Then they will only be released to the parent.
It's a balance between need and want, but I think it's more important that my child be able to use it if needed.

I think cellphones should be allowed in school so kids can call their rides when to pick them up or to tell them that they have detention or going with friends. Instead of using the school's phone and waiting in line to use the phone, plus the school's phone isn't always open.
As long as the students don't use the phone in the class room when they should be doing work, then it should be fine. Keep the phone on silent and use the phone when it won't interupt a lesson or other people's time.

The way things are going in this world today, I think the children need to have a cell just in case of emergency. You really never know what may happen. Bomb threats, shootings, stabbings, suicide attempts, etc. My nephew is 10 and he has a little pre paid cell phone, and he knows to only use in case of emergency, and he has everyone's # programed in it as well. My best friends daughter also has a Disney mobile phone in which U can enable & disable the phone at any time, even if U don't have the phone with U at the time. It neat b/c it's computer operated & if U don't want your child 2 make accessive calls U can program it 2 only call home, 911, or immediate next of kin. So yes I think it is appropriate b/c U just never know what may happen.

I do not personally have a cell phone but here is one reason that I can think of
in many schools, the payphones have been removed with the coming in of cell phones. Most of the time, anymore, there is not a single public phone on campus (I've been through that MANY times)
...so, I end up having to walk 5 blocks at 11:00 at night after a wrestling tournament in the slush and snow, only to have to have my change ate or not find a working payphone for 3 miles.

I believe it is important to have cell phones in the classroom or in the lockers in case of an emergency. Totally removing the phones from the kids can actually put them in harm when they encounter a dangerous situation. It is very easy to text or even make a quick phone call.. and that very phone call can save lives. I also think it is important for after school- so they can get home safely. These days it is almost impossible to get by without a phone because everyone has one. I would limit the use of cell phones in classes for texting (cheating) because that is unnecessary. The only time I actually think it benefits the environment is in case of an emergency. Look at Virginia Tech .. I am sure cell phone came in handy around that time.. to warn others .. or even express last words. Sometimes it is annoying how anyone can get in touch with you at any moment.. and it is almost strange if you do not get in touch with someone. Because of the new technology coming out.. it is impossible to not get ahold of someoen.. that can be good or bad.. depending on the situation!

There is nothing wrong with cell phones in school. In fact, they are needed so that buy parents can keep up with busy children. The problem is that students take immature approaches to having them in school. The phones themselves do not cause the problem in the school. They are disruptive when they ring in class or someone takes a picture of someone changing in gym class and posts it on the internet. The school conduct code has to address the problems and parents need to understand the consequences. Parents do not realize how difficult it is to maintain a class when a student is cursing her boyfriend on the phone or jumps up to go beat up someone because of a text message she just received. Most parents are supportive of the school rules. However, there are enough parents who make it hard to discipline their children for cell phone abuse at school because they give the phones back to them to bring back to school after an infraction. With parents, students, and the school working together the cell phone can be an asset. Otherwise, schools will continue to have to make harsh rules because of the problems caused by a few.

I am a Mom of 3 and I say if they are shut off or in a locker that it's fine to have one.Think about this what if someone came into the school where your child was going and started shooting or held students and teachers hostage?.If no one had a phone how many more people would die? There are so many pros's for a young Adult to have a cell phone with them. This world is wicked we no longer live in a safe environment like when many of us was children.

You don't need a cell phone in school. You can use a pay phone to contact your parents, like everyone else has done for the last 50 years. The chances of there being an actual emergency you need the phone for are so ridiculously slim that they are completely negligible in light of how distracting cell phones are and how much they are used for cheating and goofing off during class.
