Many states allow a person to set up a trust for the care of their pet/s. The trust indicates a person or a humane group who will physically care for the animal using these proceeds. The way the trust is set up there are usually some oversight from the court or another entity to make sure that the person or group does not take the money, kill the animal, etc. After the animal dies any remaining money in the trust is distributed per the directions in the will.

This is not just for the rich. Many people who love their animals do not want to burden their heirs by making the heirs decide to kill the animals or spend money to care & feed for the animals, especially if the animal/s have their own medical problems.

The more I deal with humans, the more I love cats.

Normally there is a stipulation as to who is responsible for taking care of the cat. The funds, etc., are controlled by that person. Since a cat cannot sign a legal document, which is a requirement for a will, the cat cannot have a will; the person to whom its care has been entrusted can.

That part of the will is void. You cannot leave anything to an animal. However, you can leave money to a trustee to take care of the animal.

The lawyers know that you would have to be out of your mind to leave something to a cat!! Therefore the entire estate would have to go throuth probate and an executor would be named to divide up the estate.

You can't leave things to a cat. That isn't a legal will. Cat's can't own property.
