IDK. But, I know the Court makes you install it, not the DMV. The DMV can only take away your license,or issue them, etc. A fine or a DUI charge is Court generated, so call the court. It must vary by state and locality. Applying for restricted license is your choice. You may not be allowed to drive at all without it, but it won't count against you when the terms habvbe been satisfactorily fulfilled. The DMV May ask you to surrender your license in the meantime. I've seen many sentenced to this, but many older cars can't be bypassed. I wondered about that. The new systems simply go to an input to a computer. The ones sentenced, it looked like part of a plea agreement, as the judge said they had so much time to get it done and at a shop who has to verify to the court it was installed. You may have signed an agreement to this or it may be in your sentence so you get it if you drive it or not. EDIT: Yes, good point. Just you "saying so" to the court will not wash. They must assume you can change your mind and drive it w/o the interlock if they made an exception. It would have to be stored at a friends house, no keys available or something, even so, I think someone's tried that and it didn't go. Or, everyone could bypass the requirement. EDIT: I also know, from being in court when I hear these sentences, that usually only that car Involved In the DUI , that Belongs to the convicted, is usually given the interlock. Not All your vehicles (Some have 3 or more.) Registration usually is not involved. If you let registration expire, say, that does not mean interlock can now "be removed". It stays on That vehicle until term of sentence expires. A lot get DUI's in unregistered vehicles and or with expired tags, remember? It goes hand in hand. If you sign a plea bargain for a lesser sentence, they can demand whatever they want. Stupid, I know. Plus it's $ and only a few shops can do it, so that's a conflict of interest. You have to return it afteerwards, you don't even get to keep it for all that installation cost. I am not Against these things, but you should be able to rent it, it should work on All cars (even a Model "T"), and you should be able to install it yourself and take it to a State shop who will inspect and approve it, free. We pay the State enough tax dollars as it is.

Well ethically speaking, I hope you would do the right thing and get some help; it is in the best interest of yourself and the lives of the innocent who may become victimized the next time you're driving under the influence. This way you will be held more accountable to society and yourself. Especially when your driving potentially endangers the lives of children.

You're the kind of person that gives us real potheads a bad name and the reason why marijuana will never be legalized. Geez, why can't you people just act right, I know for a fact that it's possible to not be an asshat while on drugs.

THC is "fat soluble". Whereas alcohol is "water soluble", it will leave your system in a matter of hours, THC is with you for months.
You can't. You're screwed if they do the right kind of test.

you cant. its not the pot that they look for and find, it is what your body metabolizes thc into that they are looking for and its in your fat cells just waiting to be discovered. i agree with the first guy. do the crime, do the time. maybe you will learn a lesson and not do this again.
