It works for some, but not for many here in America.
Some people forget that holy matrimony is a sacrament; a promise to be faithful and working out the hard times. But when alcohol, physical abuse, infidelity, and drugs are involved, they are recipes for a disaster in marriage.

Define "society."
The fact is that marriage is perceived differently by different people within society. There really is no societal norm for how marriage should be perceived. To some people it is an act of divine purpose. To some it is an economic or legal binding. To others it is totally useless. There are many perceptions of marriage in between all those beliefs. Ultimately, this is a rather vague question to ask.
I, for one, think marriage is great. I've been happily married for 7 years. No problems.

You may have found a good amount of love marriages in poor castes, mainly because they didn't care who their kids married; they were going to be poor regardless. But true, back then, it wasn't heard of to marry for love as love was a silly notion meant for children and animals. You had to marry whomever your parents picked for you and that was final. The matches were made for prosperity, breeding, property, and security. Love and marriage RARELY mixed. True, you may have been able to eventually FALL in love with your partner after a certain time. A lot of people in higher societies back then also took lovers and mistresses. Love marriages were a silly waste of time to a lot of people in those days. Back then, marriage was a social status and something that was required in order to keep the human race going. Enter the Victorian era when people were waking up and realizing that they didn't want to have their marriages come off as business contracts. They wanted LOVE, passion, thrills, and happiness. Love marriages didn't catch on completely until the early 1900's, I'd say.

A Holy union between a man and a woman. It seems today people don't percieve it as sacred like it should be, which is sad.
