Yes we do need the monarchy. If we didn't have them what would we have? President Blair/Brown?
Does anyone really think that if we didn't have the Queen and her family that your taxes would be any lower? We'd all still pay the same money to the government, our lovely MP's would get even more money to line their pockets. I'd sooner my tax went to a family that know how to conduct themselves in public.
Our 'role models' would be the likes of Victoria Beckham and other like-minded cheap celebraties.
Long Live The Queen

Yes there is a good reason why Britain still has a Monarchy. The British Monachy is part of their and our History. We wouldn't know what to do if we didn't have history to look back on. Although I'm a born American my roots can not only be traced back to Africa and the Caribbean but also to England. So therefore I'm very proud of that. I really respect the Monarchy because they truly represent what a nation is. I pray that our nation would learn from them. The people of Britain respect there Queen and always come out and help her celebrate her birthday, anniversaries and weddings. That is something we don't have. I can't even imagine anyone help celebrate the President's birthday because politics has ruined our views on our president. I have always thought that it would be wonderful if we had a Monarchy here in America. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN.

You ask the question as if you could actually do something to remove the Monarchy. The good news as far as I am concerned is that you cannot. Well unless you have a national bloodbath, civil turmoil and complete anarchy.
The Monarchy has been around with one very slight hiccup for almost 1000 years. It isn't going away. Get used to it.

The Monarchy is the head of the Church of England and the Head of British government. They do more for the country than sit around having tea parties all day long. They are akin to the Department of Protocol in the US. They take care of all of the ceremonial parties and entertain the diplomats from other countries that visit your country. Not to mention all the work they do to raise money for charities. So, YES, Britain definitely needs the Monarchy.

The royal family are just a relic of the past.
However, as with other outdated concepts, such as religion, it is very hard to rid ourselves of these institutions once they have gained a foothold.
Of course the monarchy today is just a sham as can be clearly seen in the recent 'Harry in Iraq' debacle.
One of the most noticeable shifts in our nation's political landscape over the past decade has been the increasing irrelevance of the monarchy as an institution. We are moving ever closer towards a presidential institution and this can be seen very clearly in the present talk amongst the media of Gordon Brown's imminent 'coronation'.

No, the country doesn't need the monarchy. True is it a considerable expense for the tax payers. However, it is part of history and one of the things that makes Britain unique in the world. So, I say the benefits (tourism, etc.) outweigh the costs. Long live the Queen!!

I would say that The Royal Family is what other nations identify as part of the rich history of England. It just wouldn't be the same w/o them.
They are not a drain, as they do (now) pay taxes, a LOT of Taxes! and they provide tourism for the country.

Time for a down-sizing. The monarchy costs too much, and too many royals are on the payroll. It is time to have a monarchy more like the Dutch or the Danish monarchies.

As an American, I like the thought that somewhere on the planet there is a people still clinging to the outmoded institutions of a violence-filled past. It's cozy just knowing that it's way over there.

to me & this is my personal opinion.
they are the biggest waste of space on the planet.
others will tell you, but the queen brings investment & touts for british business, abroad.
so correct me if i'm wrong,
that's the queen, so what about the rest of the hangers-on?
what darn use are they?
& we pay for them all out of our taxes.
yes, prince phillip gives us a laugh with his tactless & indescreet comments.
it would appear some of the younger ones are becoming a chip of the old block, prince harry with his Nazi uniform!
what possessed him?
they're all a tax-drain & if we must have a royal figure head, lets just have ONE.
Just One & we get to decide who not them!
i have no opinion one or the other over Wills, i actually feel a little sorry for him. as the Media circus is the last thing a young man needs.
his mother was i think, the best thing to ever happen to the Royal family & look what they did to her?
& NO WAY WILL I EVER accept that pair of ignorant adulterers on or anywhere near the throne!
that silly bat-eared man Charlie with his Horse, can go swing if they think the great british public will ever stand up & think them fitting of the title King & Queen of England.
Gladys & Fred the affair that spanned 3 decades & if only he'd kept his flies closed, i doubt if poor baby-incubator diana would have ever died.
that's my thoughts JUST ONE touting for us & get rid of the rest.
