Big bang theory does not explain faster than light expansion of space, inflationary theories do. Secondly space does not require any mass whatsoever, the universe could be empty and happily exist (with no one inside it). The problem is that people think of the universe expanding into something, this is a bad representation. Think of the universe as simply being a closed system, like a loaf of bread, that is just expanding and growing, stretching itself out. It doesn't need matter for this to occur.

it can't, if there is no mass there is no space. Before the big bang there was the void which is neither vacuum nor space. Time and space came into existance with the creation of matter.

It is not expanding faster than light if it did it would have a mass of infinity and collapse the hole thing.

There is no such thing as empty space. Dark matter makes up 95% of the universe's mass, yet we cant see it or detect it.
