I don't think learning to knit is hard at all, especially if you have a live teacher sitting next to you, guiding your hands. I learned it from a relative just two years ago, on my 40th birthday, and fell in love with the craft almost immediately! But many people learn from books, from television shows, (Knitty Gritty, on DIY and HGTV, is a very helpful show), or, even better, a free website called www.KnittingHelp.com, which has tons of videos showing you how to knit and various other knitting techniques.

And the wonderful thing about knitting is that it's very rhythmic, so maybe your first few stitches might be a little awkward, but you get to practice over and over with each new stitch, and you get better and better. As you practice and get better and your confidence grows and you start to enjoy the rhythm of it, you're also creating a beautiful scarf (or whatever you decide to make). All with just two sticks and some string -- there is beauty in simplicity!

If you're going to teach yourself, a word of advice. Casting on, (which is getting the very first row of loops on your needle, before you even start knitting them), can sometimes be a little intimidating. Don't let it discourage you, and keep in mind that once you get those first loops on your needle, and knit your first row or two, the rest of the actual knitting is really fairly easy. Be patient with yourself, and don't stress over it. You can learn to knit in thirty minutes or less!

Good luck!

No not at all, my friend taught me and i learned in no time...i haven't knitted in a while and i can still remember how to do it, so once you learn it you should be just fine.

It depends on your patience level and desire. My mom loves to knit and crochet and she tried to teach me but I can't do it. At all. I would start and then get distracted by something more exciting and screw it up. Supposedly it's not hard but if you're a "wiggle worm" like I am you might have some issues haha...

Good luck!
