Here is the account of the Republican involvement and support for Al Qaeda.

The origins of the terrorist group, Al Qaeda can be traced to the period following the Revolutionary War in Afghanistan of April 1978, which brought revolutionary Marxists to power. Operation Cyclone was the code name for the United States CIA program to arm Islamic mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, 1979-1989.Somewhere between $3–$20 billion in US funds were funneled into the country to train and equip troops with weapons, including Stinger surface-to-air missiles.

According to a Newsweek article, in the late 1980s, Pakistani President Benazir Bhutto, concerned of the growing strength of Islamist movement, told President George H. W. Bush, "You are creating a Frankenstein."

The article said nothing about Republicans supporting terrorist groups. It said they were being supported by the CIA and the US Government. Last time I look, we don't live in a one-party system.
