I'm a drummer, and a longtime student, so there's a good chance that not many people will have heard of some of the drummers I like. However, here's my favorite drummer:
Billy Cobham. He is hands down the most phenominal, pyrotechnic, PRECISE, unbelievable drummer I have ever heard. He was a founding member of Mahavishnu Orchestra, and there are tons of drummers who cite him as a direct influence on their playing (Danny Carrey and Mike Portnoy, for example)
Here are some other legendary drummers to check out, from now and historically:
Dennis Chambers
Terry Bozzio
Steve Gadd
Vinny Calaiuta
Virgil Donati
Tony Williams
Elvin Jones
Carter Beauford
Gene Krupa
Buddy Rich
Danny Carey
There are many more excellent drummers, but these guys have passed beyond the level of "excellent" and into a realm of their own, creating ideas, concepts, and exploring new ways of approaching drums. Each and every one of these players you can listen to and realize that absolutely no one else plays the way they do. After some practice, you can recognize their ideas and styles in other drummer's playing, and start applying it to your own.
You really should check out Billy Cobham, though. The things he is capable of are inhuman.

I am a drummer myself. There is more than just swinging sticks at a drum head. It takes alot of practice to keep good beats so everything isn't the same sound.
Any drummer in a band knows what I'm talking about. My hats off to all the drummers in the world

Ringo Starr. Equiped with only a basic kit, no drummer comes close to his innovative, intuitive style. His son Zak is also quite skilled - if being invited to join both the Who and Oasis full time weren't evidence enough.

Moon the Loon.Ringo Starr.Tony Williams.Joe Morello ex Dave Brubeck.Art Blakey. My cousin Jimmy Ellis, he's a session man, played with them all. Alan Ganley who taught my cousin.Phil Seaman, Ex Tony Kinsey.Tre from Green day.(I just love the bass player but they are a cool band).Ed Thigpin.Don Henley. My mate Richard Brand,ex Mickey Finn and Hans Herbert who was in my band then joined Geno Washington. Most of these drummers use/used Ludwig drum kits, best there is. Never heard him play but, love to "Erdigan from Gilpins Bell

Travis Barker is awesome. I don't know much about drumming, and i know Blink 182s songs can get a bit cheesy but Travis has such an original style. His drumming really stands out from any i've ever heard. Especially on the song "Mutt"
