"solve" for x; x = 1, 3

Use test points of, say, 0, 2, and 4. Plugging 2 into the inequality gives a negative value which is what would be <0 as your problem reads.

These are only hints :
The product of two numbers is <0 (negative) if one of the numbers is <0;
Either x-3<0 or x-1<0;
Either x<3 or x<1;
Now do a little bit of reasoning to conclude ;
x>1 AND x<3.

1 < x < 3
Test x = 2 :-
(2 - 3).(2 - 1) = (-1) x 1 = - 1 as required (< 0 )
