Ahh, good point! Maybe you should tell them that you were combining the roles of designated drinker and designated driver into one.

If you are the designated driver, that means you will be the responsible person to drive everyone else home after the party. The whole reason for having a "designated driver" is to have a friend that you can count on to stay sober during the evening, who will be responsible for the safety of your friends while getting them home. If you offer to be a designated driver, you are morally obligated to NOT drink. The fact that you drank and got drunk is upsetting because if you are designated to drive everyone home after the party, and you're drunk.....what do you think will happen? Do you want to take the chance on killing yourself, your friends, and possibly anyone else on the road that night? It's called responsibility and maturity and obligation. I would be mad, too, if my friend was to be the designated driver then got drunk. Makes me think she doesn't care WHAT happens to me...would she actually get behind the wheel while drunk? If so, I don't need friends like that. How do you think your friend feels? What if the shoe were on the other foot? Would you be upset if your sober driver got drunk and you had to find yourself a ride home with someone sober? Not fun. Not nice. And definitely not a nice thing to do to a friend.

Well when you say designated driver usually 90% of everyone would think that you shouldn't even have a sip of alcohol. When I'm a designated driver, I still drink, but only a few. I at least make it a point that I'm not the one getting wasted, but can still have some fun. And, I make sure I'm not over the driving limit to get a DUI.

Designated driver is picked to make sure drunk people are not driving and causing accidents. It is a responsibilty that should have been met when you agreed to do it. There is no point in designating a driver if the driver is drinking too.

The point of being a designated driver is to drive your companion home when he or she is too drunk to drive. A designated driver needs to be sober or else there's no point in having a designated driver.

LOL The designated driver was drunk. You do not drink if you say you will be driving home. That is usually how it works. You both should have rode home in a cab.

It means that you're the token guy that's going to be sober and responsible for driving everyone home SAFELY. If you got so drunk that by the end of the night you weren't sober then, yeah they had a right to be mad!

that is so not cool to joke about.
the designated driver, as everyone on the planet knows, is the one responsible for safely driving everyone home. I guess the operative word, which you didn't get, was "responsible."
