4x^2 = 4*x^2
5x^2 = 5*x^2

4x^2 times 5x^2 = 4 * x^2 * 5 * x^2
= 20 * x^2 * x^2
= 20x^4

(4x^2)(5x^2) = Commutative property of multiplication
(4)(5)(x^2)(x^2) = Constant times constant
20(x^2)(x^2) = Multiplication of same base is the addition of exponents
20(x^(2+2)) = 20x^4

20x^4

you multiply the bases first 4 times 5 = 20
then the xs: x to the power 2 times x to the power 2 = x to the power 4
so the answer is 20 x to the power 4

Multiply the numbers first.

5*4 = 20

then multiply the x's:

x^2 * x^2 = x^(2 + 2) = x^4.

now put together: 20x^4
