The word used was "detente" the meaning of which is closer to "surrender" rather than "thaw".

Roe -vs- Wade (based on the fiction that the right to privacy is enshrined in the Constitution - it isn't.)

Watergate was the apartment building where it took place.

USSR invaded Afghanistan in 1979. President Carter decided not to allow the US to participate in the Olympics, held in Moscow in 1980. Of course, that pretty much guaranteed that the USSR would get the most gold medals because most of the top competition came from the USA.
Strange way of punishing the USSR - like cutting off your own nose to spite your face.
