All an abnormal Pap smear means is that there some cells that look odd under the microscope. Sometimes it means that the doctor didn't get a good sample, sometimes it means that you've got some kind of irritation or mild infection that may not be caused by the same virus or bacteria that causes an STD, sometimes it can be caused by having sex or using lube or tampons in the 24-48 hours before your pap smear and sometimes, cells just grow funny.
It's not something to worry too much about, yet. When pap smears are abnormal, they're graded according to how severely abnormal they are. Depending on how serious the abnormality is, they may want to wait, and repeat the pap smear in a few months, or do a test called a colposcopy, where they paint your cervix with vinegar or a similar solution that makes the abnormalities show up better, and use a camera or microscope to take a much closer look at your cervix. Sometimes during the colposcopy, they take biopsies (small samples of the tissue of the cervix) which they can then look at more closely in the lab and further diagnose what's going on.
It's stressful to know that things aren't quite right, but pregnancy can causes so many changes. Talk to your doctor about what the test results mean, and what might come next, but don't panic.

Please, please understand that having HPV doesn't mean you have cancer. The chances are really very small. When I had an abnormal pap years ago I freaked... I didn't tell anyone because I was sure it was cancer and I wanted to 'morn' myself for a bit. When I finally broke down and told my mother it turned out both she and my aunt had the same problem... with *NO* cancer ever showing up. Back when I had this the proceedures were different... I don't know if they ever really did a full out 'biopsy'... they just scraped some cells which they tested and found to be 'precancerous' (I'm guessing that equals HPV... I know it was HPV and so I'm guessing that is what they meant by this term). Then they did a 'freezing treatment' that is no longer done and had me get more frequent paps for the next year or two. It never returned at all and it has been over 10 yrs. Feel free to email if you think chatting more might help... but really that was the end of the story for me and from what I hear that is *very often* the case. :) Hope that helps!

95% of abnormal pap smears result in no problems at all according to my doctor. It's a screening test. The next test is likely to exclude any problems.

It's probably just a little bacterial infection, which is very common. Sometimes they can't tell this from the PAP, but they will often give you an antibiotic, then repeat the PAP in a couple of weeks.

I had my pap come back irregular when I got pregnant with my first daughter. The doctor told me it was displaysia, abnormal cell growth. They couldnt do much while I was pregnant, but afterwards, they froze my cervix and scraped off the abnormal cells. It didnt hurt and I havent had any problems since then.

it may be nothing to worry about but they'll probably monitor the cell changes. Basically that's what an abnormal pap is, different grades of cell changes. It would be best to speak to your doctor about it just so that you can feel a little bit more at ease. They can probably explain it a lot better than I can.

When I had an abnomal result in my pap, the OB told me to come back and take another one right away and that result came back normal. I'm sure your OB will have you check out again. Don't worry, it could be nothing! When that happens. I always worry for nothing.
