I will be travelling around the city during the day, mostly in the Chapultapec and Zocalo regions of D.F.

I don't think any subway in any city is safe for a woman; and in Mexico City I think it is even more dangerous. That country had had some of the biggest problems with drugs and crime in the past two or three years. It doesn't help that many of the police officers there are corrupt to. So if I was you, I'd be very careful!!!

Coincedently, here is an article from CNN posted today that describes a gun battle between police and drug dealers that left 22 people dead in Mexico City

Why not do a Google search on the names Dominic and Nancy Ianiero of Woodbridge, Ontario and read their story. There have also been two subsequent tragedies concerning Canadian tourists in Mexico, the latest coming just a week and a half ago. If anything happens to you anywhere in Mexico and you get yourself in to trouble or worse, end up robbed, beaten, raped and even murdered, don't expect anyone to come to your aid. Don't expect there to be any justice.

I would go to Amsterdam instead. Come to think of it, I've been there. I highly recommend it. People are opinionated, but very tolerant. Pedestrians and cyclists have the right of way and priority in a traffic altercation. Amsterdam may be seen as a 'city of sin' to some, but it's far more safe and user friendly than anything you would find in Mexico.

Peace

The subway isn't safe for anyone, let alone a solo woman traveller. Might was well hang a sign on you saying "please rob me".
