Look down inside the drain and see if there is water there. Or, disconnect the trap under a sink where the odor is coming from to check. If the trap is dry, you have a vent problem and when fixtures are used, the trap is sucked out. This allows sewer gas to enter the home. This gas is harmful to humans and can also be flammable. If there is wter in the traps, try pouring bleach into the drains to kill bacteria that has formed.

All drains should have a P-trap. This is designed to hold water specifically for the purpose of stopping sewage odors from backing up into the house. If you drains are run properly, I would imagine there must be something in your P-trap. Removing these is not fun. It isn't hard, but it STINKS. If you look under your sink it is pretty self-explanatory how to get it off. Once it is off, get the old yucky water out of it, soak it in a bleach and hot water mixture. Scrub it out if necessary. When reinstalling, make sure to use teflon tape on the threads. This will help keep from leaking.

Oh, another note, when you take it off make sure you stuff a towel in the open end of the pipe that leads to your sewer / septic. Without the P-trap there is nothing to stop the sewer gases from coming back in the house. I usually put a towel in, then secure a sandwich bag over that w/ rubber bands.

A box of baking soda and chase it with vinegar and hot water. That will take care of most odors from drains.
