10w30 is thicker

2007-05-17 04:55:00 · answer #1 · answered by MechBob 4 · 1 0

The first number is the weight cold the second when hot the lower the number the thinner the oil. Most newer cars use 5 w 30 using anything 10w 30 is twice as think when cold but the same when hot. Using the wrong weight onil is a car is like putting the wrong size fuse in a fuse box. Something will burn up. I have seen many a car in our shops with a loud claccking noise coming from the valve cover until the car warms up. 10 times out of 10 its because someone used 10w30 rather the 5. Todays motors the oil passages that snake all around the motor to lubricate it are very narrow and they need the thinner oil to get through on start up rapidly. That is why they specify it. Using the wrong weight motor oil in a car is just as bad and sometimes worse then never changing it.

They are both 30 weight once they reach operating temp. The only difference is the cold weight.. 10 is thicker than 5 when the oil is cold.

W stands for winter, which is thicker 5 drops per minute or 10 drops per minute. 5 is thicker when cold.

10w30 (the w stands for weight)

They are both the same "weight". The viscosity is altered by additives to allow the 5W to circulate easier/faster when cold.
