My landlord claims I need to buy a new AC because the window unit I already have would cost "thousands of dollars" in damages. I've noticed lots of other brownstones on my block with window ACs, and they don't seem to be damaging the buildings. Also, I am only living here for one summer. My landlord has a history of exaggerating, so I'm wondering if I have an argument.

Ask him to elaborate on how the damage is caused. Most window units extend far enough out of the window to prevent the condensate from running down the walls outside. If the water is pooling outside the building, you may want to find a way to drain it away further.
