I just moved into a new place and my neighbor across the hall keeps stopping by....then he forgets to leave. I don't want to be mean, but I don't fancy his company all the time. I think dating a neighbor is as disasterous as dating a co-worker. It's too odd and awkward. He asked me out for drinks this weekend and I accepted (because I LOVE to drink), but seeing how liquor is my motivation, I need to break the date. Any advice on how to do that? Any advice on how to let him know we need to just be friends? Any advice on how to let him know that he cannot just stop by and occupy me for hours on end? I don't want to be all high-school about it and play games (like try to "scare" him off by acting like a nutcase or find a "pretend boyfriend"). We're both adults and I'd like to handle it as such.
Thanks for the ideas!! :-)

I hate to say it, but I think you should just be honest. Tell him you really appreciate his effort, and he is a great guy (even if he's not), but you don't really see a potential for romance. Tell him he is more than welcome to stop by, just call first. If that doesn't work, you might have to get a bit more firm with him.

Good Luck!!

The best thing to do is to have an honest conversation about your issues with him. Truth is best because he cannot later accuse you of leading him on. As you said, you live across the hall! You don't want trouble either. Just explain to him that you like your alone time and that means you don't want him over constantly. Point out that you don't have all your other friends over all the time either. Maybe set up some kind of signal that one or the other wouldn't mind company (which goes for you with him too) and this way you aren't stepping on each others space. If he doesn't go for this, then just tell him you don't see how the two of yas can be friends then.

Ask him to give you a call before stopping by.
If you are not interested in him as a boyfriend, tell
him you are interested in someone else and he might not appreciate him just stopping by your place.

just tell him that something has come up and you cannot get out of it . Also say that perhaps you should call before coming over.
