installing and upgrading your memory is possibly the easiest upgrade you can do with your p.c
and with the price of memory modules(except sd-ram)at a all time low, theres never been a better time to upgrade
however just to check the memory module you need you can go to http://www.crucial.com/,and use the crucial memory tool
this handy little utility scans your p.c(after asking you to install a small active x control)and returns a indepth report on what type of modules you need and what speed
it will also let you know if you need to upgrade them in pairs,or as single modules, all very handy information
the report will also tell you your motherboard make and manufacturer, and your graphics interface(a.g.p / pci-express)
after you have read the report you have the option to buy directly from crucial or somewhere else on-line,or you can print the report, and take it with you when you visit your local p.c shop
oh,yes, and when you are there you can buy a anti-static wristband for when you finally do the memory upgrade
however allthough the wristband are handy to have, they are not essentail,i just touch the pipes at the bottom of the radiator, and this does the same job, what your basically doing is earthing yourself, and clearing your body of any anti-static friction as this can cause all kinds of damage to computer components and peripherals
any problems let me know
good luck mate!

A wrist strap is a good solution as it ensures that you are grounded to the pc all the time.
Generally I:
1) make sure the power is disconnected.
2) set the anti-static bag/case on the bare metal of the pc
3) stand/sit in a comfortable position where I can add/remove the component without moving.
4) touch the bare metal of the case. touch the inside and outside of the anti-static bag/case (some are only anti-static on one surface)
5) Add/remove whatever component. If removing immediately place it in the anti-static bag
If you need to get up and go somewhere, even if it is just a couple of paces to reach a screwdriver, go though the procedure again.

The anti-static wrist strap grounds you so you don't send static electricity through the component. It's not absolutely necessary but if there is a lot of static in your work space it might be easier to use it. You can just touch the metal case every time before touching the components, do this especially after moving around on carpet.

wist strap is not required
all you need to do is place both hands on to the metal work of the computer case, that will earth your body dischargind the static
next unplug the power cable from the computer.
remove the memory, only hold the mem sticks by the edge don't touch the mem chips or the brass connectors, with your fingers
place the mem sticks into a plastic bag, first touch the bag to the metal on the computer to remove the static

An anti-static wrist strap is a good idea, alternatively touching the power supply is usually enough to equalise static. But there is an easier way: go to CPU-ID and down load CPUZ.exe - free. Run it from your desk top & it will tell you everything you need to know about RAM, your CPU, motherboard and cache. It might even make the coffee, but I wouldn't count on it.

You should wear an antistactic scrap but as long as you ground yourself then its ok. Also never touch the RAM on the flats sides it may damage it. Always put 2 fingers in the edges. Also the RAM in your system is probably the standard DDR so all you need is some DDR RAM which will fit with ease.

before you remove your memory
touch a radiator and then remove the memory stick if you have a anti static wear it
also if you have a anti static bag use that as a glove or
just look in your motherboard handbook it will tell you what memory you have
