The Vatican, which is a politically distinct entity within Italy, is the smallest independent state in the world. Also San Marino, which is also located within Italy, and Monaco are next in line.
*Update: Upon examining previous questions, I've found that past answers have claimed that Bassas da India is the smallest country. However, it is uninhabited and is basically a barrent rocky atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean, so it cannot be considered a country.

Bassas Da India is the smallest country in the world.
Even though it's not inhabited, it's still considered a country since it is a territory of France.

It is Vatican City which is just 0.2 sq miles and it surrounds St. Peter's Basilica. Interestingly the Vatican is surrounded completely by Rome, Italy.
