Females don't lay eggs without males, and the males actually care for the eggs and young (but of course cannot get them without a female). So I'm a little confused.

A picture sure would help. It it has a white egg spot then it is female. Here is a web site that shows both males and females

Perhaps your fish is sick; ich, rot, fungus?!

Duse it look like salt sprinkled on the fish? If so probably ick(parasite).
