My boyfriend (who is incredibly intelligent recently told me that sometime during the 80's America (NASA, I would assume:)) launched a message to space in an attempt to introduce ourselves to "aliens". The message apparently had a picture of both a male and female who were saying hello. I've tried using both google and wikipedia and have found nothing.
I don't believe he just made this up, he's full of random facts.

Your boyfriend is right.

Those plaques and phonograph records were affixed to the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft, which are now heading out of our solar system.

Voyager 1 has already crossed into the terminal shock and is expected to pass through the heliopause and into interstellar space in the next few decades. Voyager 2 is also close behind.

Yes, but it was late 60's, early 70's... and they used the Arecibo dish in Puerto Rico (the worlds largest.) They blasted out a message relating to our solar system, the shape of man, DNA, and our location. I remember seeing one scientist talking about it; it went out in the 21-centimeter band, which is the wavelength of hydrogen, and he said, "For 2 minutes, we became the brightest star in the galaxy in that wavelength."

To expand on a previous answer: Voyager carried a gold disk inscribed with basic mathematical formulas, instructions for playing the sounds inscribed on it, and numerous scenes illustrating life on Earth.

We have never sent an intentional message into space

The WOW signal was incoming, not outgoing
