Try www.discogs.com it's a worldwide database cross referencing artists and their releases under labels, names (Marc Bolan / T.Rex / John's Children and all collaborations etc) and cat #. Free to join excellent site for all your info.

bogwoppi reccommended allmusic.com, and i would too, but bear in mind the fact it's an american site and misses off lots of british single releases.
i'm sure you'll find plenty of other useful answers on here.
ps. why did you choose to do an assignment on a subject you don't know much about?
