Another good book on the topic and also a primary source, "Hard Tack and Coffee". Written by a former officer from, I think, Massachusetts. It is superior in every way to any secondary material written on the life of the soldier.

Plus, it's a damn good read.

check at your local library and see if they have any of the biographies of Union soldiers, such as The Life of Billy Yank or Mr. Lincoln's Camera Man.
