They connect socialist to negative images and collective memory. So they try to rename themselves so that their ideology would be more acceptable to the uneducated masses.
Note: I say uneducated in the sense that people do not bother to learn about the issues or policies they vote for.

Should I follow the advice of your own statement and ignore the socialist comment because 'it is not true'. It is odd that in the same breath you condem people calling you names on this site you do the same exact thing in return. And to quote you again 'And should they(you) be intutitive or intelligent enough to find out what I am really about, it would not bother me either since I am not ashamed of what I am." Try following your own advice.

Liberal and socialist both mean different things But like other words can interact and overlap with other words.
So while a liberal can have a socialistic view point on one subject or even a sub-subject does not mean they are socialists.
Democrats and Republicans can also be liberal and have socialistic views on subjects and sub-subjects.
I'll give you that all the words can fit together and over-lap at times but can not agree they are the same.
And people saying things must bother you or you would not have mentioned it (one of those sub-subjects - subliminal - and that is the truth).

Or how they don't want to be refer to as liberals but as progressives.
Air America use that term.
As far as truth goes both sides have a tough time dealing with the the whole truth. Both are set on believing on just the truth they agree with and ingore the rest.
If we all got a hold of the whole truth we find out rather quickly that we are all wrong to one degree or another and we have more to learn about the other side before passing harsh judgement.

I think they don't like the label applied to them. Not all liberals and Democrats are socialists, sure some of their ideas have socialist overtones, but what is so wrong about having a society care for itself? of course like anything it can be taken to an unhealthy extreme (which is what many of them are pushing for)

Wait a minute...You're saying there is no difference between a liberal Democrat and a Socialist? I believe that if you were to deeply investigate, you would find there is one, and only one, difference--the spelling!

I don't know if it's interesting, but, I work with a so called liberal and everybody is suspicious of him. He always has a comment about everyone else's work ethics. It's like, "gee, your so liberal, can you get off my back?!?" It's like he's pro-management . Like he puts himself on a pedestal so he can see all of us and is constantly judging our behavior and why are we so less productive than this self conceived production level only he and management can expect. Interesting? try, annoying. ( He actually thinks that Hilary would make a great President, she wasn't even a good First Lady) Run the country?!? Try controling your husband. She's so liberal she couldn't throw a little lovin in Arkansas Bill's lap. Liberals enjoy taking cheap shots at southerners , "cuz deys ignorant". Well how urban is Arkansas? ( sorry Arkansas) I wouldn't call southerners ignorant and don't refer to people from Arkansas as hicks.

I don't have a specific generalization about myself. As long as I'm true to myself and get along in the world, I really don't care what other people want to call me. Besides, what's in a name? Especially when they don't really know you for who you really are?

I find the whole thing frustrating.
There is a tug-of-war going on over my desire to retain my liberties, and those who want to take it from me. And rather than hear that this is as bad for them as it is for me, they stoop to the base-form of humanity, issuing insults and decrying ME as "irrational" or "hateful."
Therein is the difference of how we view name calling. I say their politics are illogical, while they attack me personally.
They appear to hate the person rather than just hating the person's political views.
