Sounds like many answered regarding the History of Rock... but you specifically asked about CLASSIC Rock .... Typically this refers to the music that was played on the early FM stations starting in the late 60's and early 70's. Prior to this AM radio was king, playing all the rock songs that were typically no longer than about 3 minutes, and played off the 45 RPM records .... When FM rolled in, the DJ's started playing rock music off the albums, with song much longer than the standard 45's. Groups and artists like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger were getting tons of air time on the FM stations, and you would never hear this on AM. FM started off more underground, but evolved into mainstream. Hope this helps some.

Well classic rock music wasn't always "classic." You have a combination of various styles. Gospel, orchestral, blues, folk, the list is endless. Mostly from the three I listed. Early rock 'n' roll came from blues, gospel, and some chord progressions of orchestral music. ( such as Pachabels Cannon) Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis learned much of what they did in church. Moving forward, these records made their way across the pond and a generation of young Brits loved what they heard. They formed their own groups to try and emulate what they heard on the records. Thus comes what is called the "British Invasion." There is where the "classic rock" format is born. Mainly from The Beatles format. If you hear 50's rock in roll it resembles a swing band which is what was popular in the previous generation. In the mid 1960's The Beatles began what was known as "beat music." (Thus the spelling of their name) Everyone since has done a form of a copy of that. Hope I helped.

Most of the explosion came from Robert Johnson and other Delta Blues artists being introduced to England. It made such an impression on such young minds such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff beck. The Yardbirds formed very early on in the birth of Classic Rock. Most of it stemmed from American Blues!!!!!!!!

Rock is based on mainly the blues and rhythm. It has a some folk music influence as well. The people who did the blues were I believe mainly from the south and were black. Elvis ripped off the black people and made it more mainstream.
