Republican Senator Chuck Hagel Says, "The American people deserve an Attorney General, the chief law enforcement officer of our country, whose honesty and capability are beyond question.," the Nebraska Senator wrote in a statement. "Attorney General Gonzales can no longer meet this standard." Should Attorney General Gonzales step down?

What I find amazing is that we as a people are so eager to throw in the towel on ethical standards of our public servants. Its like the American public has become spineless and have been defeated by Washington.

that will NEVER happen. The Attorney General is a lawyer. Have you ever met an absolutely honest lawyer? That being said, Gonzales does need to step down.

ALL positions of government should be filled by people who are absolutely honest.

I'm even going to do something very rare for me. I'm going to say a statement by Sen Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is absolutely correct. He said the replacement for the Deputy US Attorney General (who resigned) should have no political connections.

But what Chuck didn't explain is to what extent is that person supposed to be unconnected to a political party? If the replacement is selected by the President (who is Republican) would that be enough connection to warrant disqualification by Chuck?

Would I even pass the Chuck test in that aspect? I vote for both Democrats and Republicans. I have never met this President. But I do tend to think in conservative terms. I have driven over the speed limit but I don't think I have cheated on my income taxes and definitly not intentionally. Do I pass the honesty test?

You show me a Senator or Representative that hasn't taken money from some group and then not considered whether or not the group would like how they were voting on something later and I'll show you a rare duck.

Is taking into consideration who some group feels before you vote honest? It's legal, but is it honest? Chuck Hagle and Chuck Schumer scream for 'absolute honesty'. But could they pass the 'absolute honesty' test themselves?

There's only been one totally honest man in history, and they nailed him to a cross about 2000 years ago. I like one thing he said, "He who is without sin. Let him cast the first stone".

At this point, probably. Hagel is about the 10th Republican to say he should step down. The only reason he hasn't is because Bush would have a horrible time getting a new nominee through Congress. Also, anybody new who came in would be privy to all of the inner workings of the White House.

The US Attorney General is doing a good job he should not step down. As far as replacing him with an honest attorney? That is a joke. Hagel should go on the comedy circuit. I am sure that he can get a spot on Def Comedy Jam. I do not know of a single politician/lawyer that is honest. Maybe it is time that we got a Senator from Nebraska whose honesty and capability are beyond question. But that is just as unlikely.

There is a disease that comes out of Washington D.C. It is a plague and everyone suffers from it regardless of your party affiliation, or lack of one. Government cannot get the job done if everyone sticks to their morals and ethics. You have to compromise, then you are done and you are just like everyone else. Crooked and qualified for a prison term.

The American people deserve this?
Why?
The Christian conservatives call president Bush the man God called, that he is THE one....the burning bush for this hour!
But, in reality when Moses saw the burning bush, it wasn't the bush that did anything, but God who made the bush.
All glory goes to God alone. Forget the bush.
My point is...any old bush will do...and if Gonzales is not honest which none of them are anyway, what else is new?
Should he step down? Hmm....
Maybe if he stepped "down" and really, ALL of them should step somewhere,
it will be a step UP for America.

Compared to Sasquatch Reno, Gonzales is honest. At least, he never declared war on, and exterminated a group of people for building a compound without building permits.

Absolutely to both. The attorney general should be honest, and Gonzalez should step down.

I don't know if anyone is 'absolutely' honest.

Most people have their price - or vice.

Gonzo is exceptionally dishonest though.

We at least need an AG (strange that his initial are A.G. and his positions intials are AG too...) that is apolitical. There is no doubt in my mind that he is a tool of Bush.

Yes. The position should be filled by the most honest apolitical person we can find.

Why have an opinion? Our Government listens to the people of this country with DEAF EARS and does opposite of everything we want anyway.
