I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I am using the parental controls feature. When I select "block file downloads" it blocks users from ALL downloads. As administrator I want to setup parental controls that will allow family members to access/download email file document attachments but not allow them to download new programs and executable files. How can i do that? I'm considering an option to simply allow ALL downloads but use the 'block programs' feature such that any executable file that is downloaded would require the administrator's OK before it can be run...but I wonder if that will mess up various standard upgrades that need to be run on a regular basis.

Check the documentation for your router. There are usually firewall settings (or zones) within the router that allow you to block certain file extensions. (Different for each make and model so can not be more specific)

It is understandable why .exe files would be blocked. Most people would open this kind of attachment without thinking (along with .bat, .com and .pif files) and this is a very common way virus propagate themselves. There are tools out there that will let you select the types of file extensions to accept. However, the tools I've found usually control the e-mail client and not Vista directly (not that familiar with Vista so not sure of the functionality). We have the same problem at work and the workaround I use is to rename the file file to .ex and notify the recipient to save it as an .exe.
