I think that the migration of southern whites from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party after the civil rights era has a lot to do with it. The Republican Party, however, deliberately courted them through its “Southern Strategy.”
Also, racists are always more likely to align themselves with the most conservative party that they can. Since a third party usually has no chance in national elections, the Republican Party is their next best option.
As for the Christian part, most of America is Christian and more fundamentalists exist in the Bible Belt areas.

The Southern Democrats did move over to the Republican side during Richard Nixon's run for the presidency in 1968. Yes, it was partly out of racists views and partly because the Democratic party seemed to unravel at the Chicago convention.
But remember, it was the politicians who switched, not the people.
.
The South is not as bad as some people think,
On their own, Southern people know it is not Christian to be racist.

What a lame question.
For one thing the massive switching of parties in the South didn't happen because of the Civil Rights movement. It happened because of strong Southern support for Ronald Reagan.
As a white Southerner, a Christian, and Republican, who has very close family who are Northern, elitist liberals, I can atest to this: racism is alive and well among liberals today. Conservatives, particularly Southern conservatives, don't have the time to be racist. We are too busy working and bettering ourselves and hope that all people can and will do the same. You can believe that or not, but -- trust me -- it's true. Yes, there are rabid racists in the South, but they have are generally consumed by hatred so that normal, everyday Southerners don't mingle with them. They have a subculture all their own that is painted by the media as "normal" or "acceptable" in the South when nothing could be further from the truth. (P.S. Most of them also don't vote.) Kinda like thug life is painted as "normal" and "acceptable" across black culture. I being an average, conservative, white, Christian, Republican, Southerner, simply expect that a black person do what I do -- live your own life, obey the law and make your own way.
On the other hand, my beloved if hopelessly liberal Northern relatives (Lord bless 'em) actually believe that black people need their help by way of government hand outs to have a fair shake in this land of opportunity. Otherwise the black person is doomed to failure.
Now, I ask you, which is more racist?

Just because someone belongs to the Moose Lodge or the Lion's Club. Doesn't make them a moose or a lion.
Christian and raciest are like oil and water they don't mix.
In the future when you meet praise the lord racists, think of it as a sign to you that these people are enemies of Christ.
Be careful where you step. Hypocrites leave a mess everywhere they go

What does this mean, racist?
Liberals use the term to describe those in the Republican party . . .why?
Because liberal need the "races" for votes, so they lie and con people into believing this obscenity, it is in their best interest to keep people down. If they actually lifted them up, they would loose their voting base.
I think every American has the same relief of law, that every American can work and achieve, that race does not determine "need."
If people said that I needed their help, forevermore, because I am incapable of the intelligence it would take to care for myself . . . I would find that insulting! I would not want them to rule my life.

So Rosie O'Donnel, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and many others are not? So why can't Americans BE Americans? What's with all the African-American, Irish American, German American, Italian American, Asian American, etc...? Doing this, one would be claiming to be of two nationalities. I don't here about it in Europe, so get over it Lib.

Racism stems from an individual's inability to dissociate the assumed qualities cast upon social groups by society at large from the individuals comprising those groups.
For example, take the broad statement that if you're Republican and Christian, you're likely a racist.

I don't know where you get your facts from but I am Republican and I am not racist or bigoted..But I do know someone who is, we argue about it on a regular basis and let me tell you he is a proud liberal democrat not a republican...does his personal belief in bigotry mean that all liberal democrats are the same as he is? I didn't think so, and for you to use such a bigoted blanket statement you may have just proven me wrong...congratulations
