I use my cell phone tip calculator - enter in the total MINUS the tax, enter in 15%, and there you have it. And that's for excellent service - mediocre service is 10%, and although I haven't had horrible service in years there have been times when I tipped nothing.

As a customer I could care less about the waitresses' bad day, money problems, horrible boss, tight budget, increased rent, extended daycare, worn out shoes, impending final paper or any of the millions of reasons why she gave me crappy service. I only care how I was treated that day. If it was great, I tip 15% - it goes straight down from there.

And it is not your money - it's the family money. You should also discuss this "problem" with your husband. I'm sure he'll set the appropriate guidelines.

I usually give a good tip if the person goes the extra mile such as helping me bring in groceries (cab driver), if they're very patient, on time, bring lots of pizzas, and finally a waitress who is very attentive (not a kiss up) and makes sure we get our food on time and refills. Basically anyone who goes the extra mile to make me feel relaxed and makes my job easier. I'll even give more if they are truly going above and beyond the call of duty. Also if I don't have alot I just give what I can and I know I did the best I can.

you used to work as a waitress and you're complaining about leaving TOO MUCH? what the hell?

seriously, anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant knows that the people who leave great tips are few and far between. you shouldn't stop leaving big tips. you're making someone else's day. and if it's really a problem for you, don't go out to eat. spend that tip money on a cook book.

I overtip ALL the time! I was also a waitress and it is hard to stop because you know how difficult it can be to deal with rude people. I ALWAYS give 20%. If you stick to this you will never overtip. If the service was TERRIBLE I will give 10-15% because you know that there were times when you got a bad tip-right?

Most places have a service charge included on the bill,
where this is so I only tip when the service is really exceptionally good.
I never tip out of pity...that's demeaning.
In any instance I never tip more than 10 %

by the way I am a scot

the whole concept of tipping is weird in America .originally 'tipping ' was a way to show appreciation for a work done or a service provided and it depended on the jugdement of the tipper. but with the growth of modern pseudo neuvo riche culture , tipping has kinda become mandatory . rather than having a sense of gratituide on behalf of the 'tipee'it's become more sort of an incentiveto work better .i feel one must perform to one's bets abilities regardless . however answering your question just feel free to tip --if at all --based on what you feel about the service provided .people will always say what they have to !!!!!!!!!!!!

You should tip 20% if the service was good. As a server I can tell you that we don't expect more. And by all means, if the service was sub-par tip accordingly!
Servers get taxed on %10 of their sales, so if you tip less than %10, we are essentially paying for part of your meal. And with server hourly wages between $2-$3, that can hurt.

just stop it stooped!!!! waitresses always think they're entitled to something.. just do your job.. if you get a tip good.. if not then whatever.....i hate all these tipping guidelines..if you SUCK as a waitress then you deserve NOTHING..... STOP SPENDING YOUR HUSBANDS MONEY on waitresses and pizza guys......only tip if they do a really great job(and that does not happen often).. and never tip a pizza guy if the restaurant charges a delivery fee.

Just stop. You know what the proper tips is, so give the proper amount. If you feel like you want to show extra appreciation, give them a decent tip and a sincere thank you with a big smile. You would have appreciated that, right? Well, so will they.
