What is the best way to move a 40 hp boat motor from one boat to another. It looks heavy.?

It's not that heavy. Two people should be able to do it without too much strain. If you can lift 150lb or so comfortably, you can do it yourself. It doesn't weigh that much, but it is a bit awkward.

Swapping the motor is no problem with a little muscle power but make sure that its the correct lenght.
Your cavitation plate should line up with the very bottom of boat.
You are allowed a little leeway an inch below it or inch above it.

If both boats are on trailers, back trailers back to back and put a block under the foot and loosen the engine then have someone jack up the boat with the engine while you support the engine.
This should make the back of the boat go down and have clearance between the engine and transom of boat.

Next, while supporting the engine, swing it around and install on other boat when boat is moved under engine support brackets and lower front of second boat.

Unless you have come-a-long and something to support the engine overhead, this will suffice.

I do this for a living...
a 40hp really isn't that heavy... about 200 lbs at most so you can grunt work it with 2 guys if you want, but the best way would be to get a forklift or rig up a simple pully to hook onto the lifting eye.

If I have to move something real heavy. I call my buddy Tim aka 'bubba" He is one big ole boy. Use an engine lift and a sling. You can rent one from a tool rental place for 25 bucks a day near me

use a hoist to avoid unnecessary back injuries or damage to the motor
