It is in a sunny window. Has been in the pot for about 6 years. can I plant it outside? it is about 6feet tall and totally root bound.

Don't think it will like outside winters in zone 7. Ficus are finicky.

You could try removing it from the pot, remove all the soil you can from the roots, this will entail removal of some of the roots as well. Repot it in the same pot (3' in diameter is huge) with fresh soil. Give it a good drink of Root Stimulator (Fertilome makes a great product) to prevent shock.

I looked on Answers.com and saw a picture of a ficus as big as an oak. Its a trpical plant and zone 7 usually isn't frost bound for weeks so it might do okay. But you look there for yourself and decide.
