Teddy Roosevelt has always been among my favorite presidents. He was quite different than the business as usual Republicans he was a progressive. He did alot for the country as did his cousin Franklin. His personality was better than Franklin's. While both men had a sense of humor Teddy could out flank Franklin with jokes and anecdotes left and right.

TR, a conservation aficionado, started the National Park system. He was also modified populist who began to bust up the monopolies and oligarchies which were ruling the business world and which had had undue influence over the government. Today, TR would be considered a far left liberal.

FDR pulled the country out of the Great Depression, and saved the capitalist system in the process. Private business was unwilling to invest in the US economy, so he inaugurated innovative government programs to put people back to work. At the same time, FDR restored confidence in our capitalist financial infrastructure by setting up a system which regulated the stock exchanges and other financial markets. He also reformed the Federal Reserve System so that banks were regulated more closely, and set up the FDIC to insure customers deposits against bank failure. Of course, FDR then led the nation at the most crucial time in its history, World War II.

It's very interesting to me that someone else here has said that FDR was the president during the early years of World War II. That is false, the war in Europe was won before Roosevelt died, and Truman finished off the war against Japan a few months later by using the atom bomb.

Both the Roosevelts were great presidents, however, FDR was president during a time when capitalism and democracy in America could have been snuffed out. It is no exaggeration to say that his leadership saved our country, and our way of life.

Good question... Teddy was a breath of fresh air from some bad leaders of the time.. did alot for the country ... FDR was a great healer and was a father figure through the depression and the early war years, amazing that he was as respected as he was...

I don't know how you randomly came to select these two presidents but it is hard to compare presidents from different centuries. I will say this though, John Adams was a very rigid person and I think he would have had a lot of difficulty in the 20th century. Though I would give him the edge because he was a founding father and as such deserves the respect and admiration for participating in the creation of a new government and a free society. Quite an accomplishment.
