Cooling slows the reproductive rate of bacterial decomposers, keeping the food close to its fresh condition. Other methods of preservation (salting, smoking, canning, etc.) produce food that is substantially different from the fresh condition. I'm not sure it's the most used, but it's certainly the preferred method.

Before telling about the method of food preservation, let me remind you that why it is required ? Because, cooked and uncooked food items are subject to bacterial and germinal attacks in atmospheric temperature. So, the primary way to preserve is isolate the item from room conditions, and the common method is to either keep the food item above or below room temperature. So depending on the food stuff/material keep it in a cool (freeze) or hot /warm environment so that in these temperatures normally bacteria doesn't attack the food.

first thing that comes to mind is --- it is used because it is cheap and effective. The underlying priniciple in this method is that at low temperature enzymes are inactivated and once enzymes which are called biocatalyts are inactivated all metabolic reactions get halted and it becomes difficult for bacteria to continue it's growth. and this way our food is preserved .yeah there are other ways to inactivate enzymes but among all others cooling that is freezing is cheap and affordable

Because it is cheaper and more efficient than using chemicals. Also we know that it is effective and does not change the taste or quality of the food.
